Lochaber has an exceptionally rich and varied Earth Heritage. It is important that this heritage is celebrated and also safe-guarded for future generations.
The special character of the area's geology and scenery is recognised and protected in several ways. For example the Lochaber area has:
- 63 Geological Conservation Review sites
- 38 Sites of Special Scientific Interest
- 5 National Scenic Areas and
- 5 National Nature Reserves
