Lochaber U3A Geology Group
Meet at Corran Ferry at 09.20am to share transport, as required, planning on taking the 09.45 crossing. Anyone joining the group later please contact jim@lochabergeopark.org.uk or call 01855 821305
The excursion is in three parts; it will be modified to suit participant’s interests and abilities:-
1) The first stop is the viewpoint car park about 3 kilometres west of the Glenmore Natural History Centre. We will then make use of the off-road parking space another 3 kilometres further on and take the path to the summit of Ben Hiant. The walking distance to the summit is about 2 kilometres, with about 350 metres height gained. Most of the path is grass. The summit makes an excellent 360 degree viewpoint.
2) The second stop is to view the coastal section between the Kilchoan Ferry slipway and Mingary Castle. Igneous cone sheets and dykes are well displayed.
3) The third stop is the coastal section at Ormsaigbeg, west of Kilchoan, to view Jurrasic fossils.
Walking boots, waterproofs and packed lunch are required. Walking poles may help some participants as the ground is rough in places and the shorelines are rocky.
